Everything we do at Sunrun is driven by a determination to transform the way we power our lives. We know that starts at the individual employee level. We strive to foster an environment you can thrive in through our commitment to diversity, inclusion and belonging.

The Battery Life Cycle Engineer is responsible for optimizing the life cycle management of Sunrun’s battery assets to minimize operational costs and maximize uptime. This role focuses on analyzing failure causes, performing in-depth cost analysis, and monitoring battery degradation throughout their in-service lives to ensure sustained operational efficiency.

The Battery Life Cycle Engineer plays a pivotal role in enhancing overall operational efficiency and achieving a significant return on investment (ROI) through improved asset management and reduced total cost of ownership. This role will start by conducting an extremely extensive analysis of Sunrun’s vast and diverse data sets to estimate the degradation of our batteries and deviation from previously set regimes through contracts or agreements, including electrochemical modeling analytics and data science.

The role will develop into supporting our Supplier Quality Assurance team with corrective action plans, conducting root cause analysis for both degradation and sudden failures, and working cross-functionally with our service teams to develop short and long-term strategies for battery end-of-life company thresholds to ensure sustained operational efficiency from an individual system’s performance standpoint.

If you are passionate about optimizing equipment performance and leveraging analytics to drive efficiency, we encourage you to apply.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Extend Battery Life by developing and implementing strategies to reduce the need for frequent replacements.

  • Calculate Savings by assessing the savings from extended battery life through the difference in replacement costs over time.

  • Improve Efficiency by enhancing the efficiency of battery use within the fleet to achieve significant savings in energy costs.

  • Extend Battery Fleet Life by implementing optimization techniques.

  • Optimize Cost Per Battery Cycle to contribute to long-term savings.

  • Perform Cost Analysis to identify areas for cost reduction per battery cycle.

  • Own virtual power plant battery analytics to co-optimize cycles vs. warranties and customer benefit.

  • Defer Capital Expenditure by developing strategies to extend the life of the battery fleet.

  • Implement Long-Term Planning to ensure the sustainability and efficiency of the battery fleet.

  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally with teams including engineering, operations, and maintenance to align lifecycle management efforts with business objectives.

  • Document Processes and Outcomes for lifecycle management, and prepare regular reports and presentations to communicate results, progress, and recommendations to stakeholders and leadership.

  • Proven experience in managing the lifecycle of batteries or similar equipment, preferably in the renewable energy industry

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail

  • Proficiency in cost analysis and financial modeling related to equipment maintenance and lifecycle management

  • In-depth knowledge of battery components and optimization techniques

  • Experience with data analysis, including querying databases and manipulating datasets (preferred)

  • Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Python) and automation tools (preferred)

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams

  • Familiarity with monitoring tools and IT operations is a plus

  • Willingness to travel 10% of the year, we are a tight-knit team that values personal interaction
