As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Sunrun proudly honors the stories and experiences of our Hispanic and Latinx employees who continue to pave the way for a brighter future. This year's theme, 'Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together,' celebrates the trailblazers who have led the way and highlights the importance of uplifting and inspiring the next generation of leaders. At Sunrun, we are proud to recognize individuals like Guillermo Durell, Sr. Director of Electrification Operations, whose leadership and dedication embody these values."

In Guillermo’s words, his journey to leadership at Sunrun is deeply rooted in his heritage and personal experiences, and it reflects the resilience, culture, and values that define his career.

Shaped by Family Values

"Growing up in a single-parent Latino family, my mother's work ethic, mindset, and determination to help our family succeed in spite of difficult situations taught me the core values that have guided me throughout my life," Guillermo shares. "These values—resilience, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence—are ones I carry with me every day, and they have been essential during my career at Sunrun. I will always cherish and be grateful for my Latino heritage."

Guillermo credits his mother’s determination as the foundation of his own success. As a leader at Sunrun, these early lessons continue to influence how he approaches his work, his team, and the larger Sunrun mission to provide clean energy for all.

Empowered to Lead

Guillermo’s career trajectory at Sunrun is also a testament to the power of mentorship and empowerment. "Early in my Sunrun career, inspirational leaders encouraged and empowered me to solve challenging situations as a frontline employee. This equipped me with the right skill sets and mentality to continue solving bigger problems and lean into complexity as I progressed my career here."

With the support of his leaders, Guillermo has not only developed his own leadership skills but has also learned to navigate complex challenges with confidence. His story demonstrates how mentorship and empowerment at Sunrun enable employees to rise through the ranks, while staying true to their values and heritage.

Honoring Latinx Heritage in the Workplace

For Guillermo, staying connected to his Latinx heritage is an essential part of his professional identity. "I always aim to stay true to my Latinx roots. I take every opportunity to talk about my traditions, culture, and family when interacting with my professional network."

Whether it’s introducing himself with a name of Spanish descent or sharing his love for Mexican music and dishes like chile rellenos and chilaquiles, Guillermo finds joy in sharing his cultural heritage with others. "My name is often difficult to pronounce, which opens up conversations about my background and allows me to proudly share stories about my roots."

At Sunrun, these interactions foster cultural exchange, deepen connections, and create a more inclusive work environment for all.

Empowering the Next Generation of Hispanic Leaders

As a leader, Guillermo takes pride in mentoring and supporting fellow Hispanic and Latinx team members, helping them grow and thrive within the company. "One of my fundamental leadership principles is the need to continue evolving and growing as individuals. Throughout my career, leaders have embedded this value in me, and I aspire to do the same each day by helping my fellow Latino and Hispanic team members grow."

Guillermo believes that empowering others is not just about sharing knowledge—it’s about providing opportunities for growth and advancement. "Being part of the Latinx community at Sunrun has provided a key opportunity to do so, and I’m extremely grateful for this."

By offering coaching, increasing knowledge, and fostering professional development, Guillermo ensures that the next generation of Latinx employees at Sunrun are well-equipped to shape the future alongside him.

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to reflect on the diverse experiences and deep contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities through time in the U.S.. Guillermo’s story is just one example of the many ways our employees bring their unique heritage and perspectives to Sunrun.
