Overview
The Lead Material Handler is responsible for the accurate receiving, put away, picking, packing, and shipping of product. Other responsibilities include maintaining inventory control and ensuring that all shipping and receiving documents and functions are completed accurately and on time. This role communicates with both internal and external customers as required and with the transportation department. The Material Handler is responsible for maintaining accurate records of all inventories. Additionally, this role accounts for defective or damaged product and performs proper transactions to move product to appropriate sub-inventory. Individuals in this position will operate a liquefied propane or electric forklift to move, stack and store product.
Responsibilities
Loads, unloads, sorts, stages and transports product into and out of our Distribution Center
Individuals in this position must work cooperatively with other Material Handlers, Logistics Specialists, and Warehouse personnel in other branches in a safe, accurate and productive manner with little supervision
Accepts, inspects, and signs for inbound merchandise as necessary
Counts all products, compares to delivery document, and checks for damage
Reports shortages, damages, and mis-shipments on appropriate forms and to the Buyers
Efficiently picks internal and external customer orders for shipment, ensuring that the correct quantity and type of product is picked
Assembles orders for shipment
Carries or transports orders to shipping location or delivery platforms with material handling equipment
Stencils, tags or marks orders as requested
Properly secures loads, ensure loads are within weight limits and packaged securely to minimize damage during transport
Ensures outbound shipments are accurate and free of damage
Follows company quality guidelines
Repacks and weighs any orders that require such handling
Reports quality variances
Conducts physical inventories and cycle counts as required
Assists in resolving any cycle count/inventory discrepancies
Maintains product locator system
May help with light assembly and record storage
Light assembly is defined as assembly of light mechanical, industrial, metallurgic, and electrical component parts or sub-assemblies that may require the use of hand tools
Maintains a clean, neat and orderly work area
Assists in maintaining the security of the warehouse
Conducts operations in a manner that promotes safety
Complies with OSHA and other appropriate standards
Follows company safety policies and procedures and encourages other Material Handlers to do the same
Safely operates forklift or other machinery in order to complete tasks such as loading, unloading, sorting, staging and transporting product
Maintains equipment in a neat and clean fashion
On a daily basis, inspects equipment that employee has been assigned
Has a passion for quality and the accurate processing of product (both inbound and outbound) including maintaining inventory accuracy
Makes suggestions for improvements and acts on them
Works cooperatively and productively with Department Heads and other Associates in order to complete tasks
Coordinates as necessary with other departments/functions, especially Customer Service, Transportation, Implementation and occasionally the customers themselves
Arranges cartons on pallets keeping in mind size and characteristics (i.e., easily crushable, etc.) in mind. Performs labeling, sorting, wrapping, packing, and repacking as needed
Works productively (i.e., receiving product, picking product, packing product etc. at or above the established rate) with little supervision
Provides and inspires outstanding service to customers by maintaining attention to detail and completing assigned work in a timely manner
Completes additional duties as assigned by Distribution/Branch Management
Qualifications
A high school diploma or equivalent is required
Must be eighteen years of age or older
Minimum 6 months experience in a Distribution or Fulfillment warehouse environment
Attendance: Proven record of exceptional attendance and reliability
Initiative: Ability to think and take constructive action at work without being urged; skill and ability in taking the lead in forwarding new ideas or work methods
Safety Orientation: Demonstrates awareness of company safety policies and procedures; includes ability to identify and report safety hazards, and the ability to encourage others to work safely
Adaptability/Flexibility: Ability to change or adapt work practices, priorities, or procedures or to reschedule activities in response to changing conditions or multiple work demands
Teamwork & Attitude: Ability to work well with others in a group, cooperate with others, offer to help when needed, maintain a positive and collaborative attitude even in challenging situations, and foster a team climate within the group where members are committed to a common goal
Problem Solving: Using a systematic and effective approach in analyzing information in order to come up with good business solutions to problems
Knowing the Business: Maintains a high level of knowledge of Distribution Center operations, products, etc
Makes an effort to understand our customer, in particular Jobsite and Branch operations that we ship to daily
Understands company’s values and culture. Understands the impact of inventory accuracy on costs and profits
Foundational Skills: Ability to understand written material and ability to write using correct spelling and punctuation; ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide using fractions or decimals
Special Requirements: Must have responsible work habits and pass a background check
Forklift certified
Ability to work safely in a warehouse environment
Ability to operate office equipment including computers and determine accuracy of work
Ability to interact with co-workers and participate in meetings
Ability to transport materials and equipment to complete assigned job tasks (up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds with assistance)
